Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

In 1966 students at the University discovered that David Godfrey, who had enrolled in Political Studies, was a member of the Security Intelligence Service. The allegations were published in the student newspaper Outspoke of 2 May, and a storm of controversy broke out within the University and then the media about the event, with demands for Godfrey to be expelled from the campus. Eventually the Government formed a Commission of Inquiry into the matter which recommended that it was inappropriate for a member of the Security Service to carry out surveillance within the precincts of a University, and that the Service should discuss such an enrolment with the University authorities prior to enrolment. The full report is found in: Report of Commission to Inquire into Administration of Security Service so far as it relates to attendance of Officers thereof at a University and matters incidental thereto, in Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, paper H-48, 1966.

The series includes correspondence, memoranda, circulars, minutes of evidence of Commission of Inquiry, lawyers’ notes, and clippings.
